Insulation & Air Seal

Insulating your home or commercial space is the primary way to reduce your bills and footprint on the natural environment. The commonly used non-encapsulated fiberglass bats are not only a direct irritant to the eyes, skin and lungs, but to the ecosystem at large. The eco-friendly options are plentiful providing healthier options for all, but also a superior, tighter seal:

• Blown cellulose made of recycled newsprint
• Soy foam of soybeans
• Cotton batting insulation made of denim

In an old structure these materials can be sprayed in cracks, nooks and crannies, and between walls, or applied straight between the frames of new construction. If you are thinking about a new build, consider Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), which come pre-insulated with a polystyrene foam or compressed wheat straw for the ultimate in renewable energy.

Take some time to walk around your home or office. Do you feel drafts, or see spaces around window and door frames? Are there penetrations in your walls or roof, where pipes or wiring go outside, with gaps around them? Do you see daylight where you shouldn’t? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, than a great place for you to start reducing your energy bill is with a tube of caulk!
